Last year was a huge year for film. I fell in love with a ton of movies and it doesn’t look like 2015 is going to slack at all. We’ve had a lot of really rad movies come out this year so far and there is even more to come. Be sure to check back next week for a breakdown of my favorite films of 2015 so far. This new feature I’m introducing to Nerd Rambles is a review column for movie trailers and since it just came out a few days ago, I have chosen to kick it off with the upcoming Matt Damon sci-fi film, directed by the great Ridley Scott, The Martian.

First off, before we even get to the trailer, lets look at the cast. I mean, it’s as if Ridley Scott said “What actors can we put together in a single film to make everyone go see it?” Then he put, aside from Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Sabastian Stan, Sean Bean, Michael Pena, Donald Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor into this movie. Sure, some might say that putting this many amazing actors into one movie could hinder the movie overall, but I disagree. I think it is a brilliant move because some of these actors are alread established in science fiction (Kate Mara in Fantastic Four, Sabastian Stan in Captain America: The Winter Solider and Ejiofor is coming into Doctor Strange) some in fantasy (Sean Bean in Lord Of The Rings and Game Of Thrones) and one who was in one of my favorite movies of the year (Donald Glover in The Lazarus Effect). Put them all together and the cast is perfectly rounded out.

Now, to the trailer. The film is based on a self-released 2011 novel by Adam Weir. The book was purchased and re-released last year through Crown Publishing and was optioned and greenlit very quickly. The basis of the film is a group of astronauts go to Mars to attempt cultivation and set up a habitat. While on the surface of the planet, an intense storm blows up and Matt Damon’s character Mark Watney is presumed dead. I am assuming that his crew could not find him and left the planet in a hurry. After the storm passes and the crew is gone, Watney wakes up, facedown on the surface of Mars. He has been marooned.

Watney is then forced to figure out his situation because the habitat set up by the crew is only able to sustain life for thirty-one days. His plan is to set up a transmitter to contact NASA, but even if he does it will be four years before another mission can make it back to Mars. He must then learn to cultivate plant life on a planet “where nothing grows” and it must be enough to keep him alive for four years.

Back on Earth, after learning that Mark is alive, his crew wants to go get him, but their big-shot boss (Jeff Daniels) denies their request because he has already told the press that Mark was killed on Mars. My thinking is that he doesn’t want to go back on his statement and make himself look incompetent.

I am very curious to see how this plays out and how Mark will manage to keep himself alive because there are clips in the trailer where he looks pretty bad. Oh, and this trailer features my favorite quote in 2015 “I’m gonna have to science the shit out of this.” I am very excited to see The Martian when it’s released.
